First ayurvedic surgery may change face of alternative med

In an unprecedented experiment that ayurveda experts said was a “first in the world”, a group of doctors successfully operated upon an 83 year-old man for prostatic, removing a massive 240 gm of prostate, without using antibiotics.

Currently, antibiotics are an inseparable part of standard operating procedure. In the four-hour long operation, surgeons only used anaesthesia but no antibiotics before, during or post-operation recovery , and only depended on ayurvedic medicines.

The patient, Ojaswi Sharma, who is allergic to allopathic drugs, responded well to the alternate medicine. The doctors, coordinating with the best brains in ayurveda, has taken the medical fraternity by surprise, struggling as it is with non-effectiveness of increasingly drug-resistant antibiotics. Sharma, who was operated upon on March 1, was kept under observation for over a month and has recovered.

Manoj Kumar, director of orthopaedics department at Delhi’s Maulana Azad Medical College, said, “The development is indeed a rare feat achieved by doctors. Conducting surgery with ayuvedic support is beginning of a new era. However, this is just one case. Much more research is needed.”
