Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Monday demanded that JNU be “purified” by shutting it down for four months to weed out “communists, jihadists and LTTE people”.
“There is only one way to purify JNU. Shut down the university for four months, question every student, especially those pursuing courses in political science and sociology who are extending their stay by several years while insulting the nation,” he said at a public function.
The BJP leader’s remarks came amid the raging row over an event on the campus to protest the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. Anti-national slogans were alleged to have been raised at the function and Guru hailed as a martyr.
“This university needs to be purified, and if people say that by doing this we are denigrating the name of Jawaharlal Nehru, then let’s rename it Subhash Chandra Bose University,” the BJP leader said.
He also suggested setting up of a police station on the campus and stationing of BSF and CRPF contingents to prevent such events in future.
